In 2022, NCI continued to see growth in our reach and impact, with 1,200 subscribers to our newsletter and rising. As our Chair of the NCI Board Fiona Ross commented: "Inbound interest in our work has also grown significantly: a clear signal of the increasing recognition and understanding of the importance of natural capital and a natural capital approach."

The biodiversity crisis and its core role in natural capital underpinned much of our work last year. We successfully facilitated a number of high-profile biodiversity-related initiatives and events, including the 2nd National Biodiversity Conference, supporting the consultation and drafting of the 4th National Biodiversity Action Plan, as well as continuing to spread the word about natural capital developments in Ireland and abroad, as outlined below.

Policy Working Group - we contributed to a multitude of policy consultations to advocate for the inclusion of natural capital language and concepts in Irish policy across sectors.

INCASE (Irish Natural Capital Accounting for Sustainable Environments) - our original research project applying natural capital accounting in Irish catchments comes to a close this year. We have submitted our final report to funders the EPA so stay tuned for publication and presentations to share our findings.

ForES - forestry project in collaboration between Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and practitioners in Coillte, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine uses a natural capital accounting approach to co-develop tools for sustainable forestry management decision-making, drawing on learnings from INCASE project. NCI is facilitating project communications so keep an eye out for blogs, workshops, videos and more in 2023.

Business for Biodiversity Ireland (BFBI) - We are also part of a consortium working with this government-backed initiative which aims to help Irish businesses work to assess their impacts and dependencies on nature and transform their business practices and supply chains to become nature positive, developing workshops and online resources for members.

Behind the scenes, our rapid growth in 2022 has required significant investment in our organisational architecture. In late 2022, we closed on NCI’s first independent review of its governance structure and in 2023 commenced a refresh of NCI’s Strategic Plan. Stay tuned for more updates in 2023.
